Reaching for a higher degree
The fact is that college can be expensive. Saving money can definitely become a difficult process, depending on how the family of a student is financially stabled. It is incredible to say that students only way to reach their goals, is to pass by and place their money to pay off their tuition. The question is asked of , Why is college education considered necessary yet so inaccessible financially? It is known that as an In- state student tuition for full time at a four year college or university is $9,139 in 2014-15. Even, for an Out-of-state student is definitely 2.5 times higher than an original estimation for full time but still continues to raise the amount. According to Bill Zimmerman on alternet.org about ‘How Did College Tuition Become So Expensive’: “The student loan crisis is a new phenomenon. Despite its huge impact, as recently as the late 1980s there was no student loan crisis. Then, middle and working class students suffered from cutbacks and had difficulty financing their educations, but overall, while the system of paying for college was beginning to break down, it had not yet become the disaster it is today.” Every student wants to have a better future. Believing that less stress should be upon them because of money, all students should have all rights to attend college. If a student wants to be present in a classroom then let education be affordable. It’s always better to increase graduation rates instead of dropouts.
Raising a college tuition has been a problem since 2008. Within the year, the cost has raised and some students were not able to afford their education. From research, New York Times stated a proposal that tuition had increased the amount of 400 percent since the past 25 years. It doesn’t seem fair that students are losing their opportunity to learn but tuitions and student loans are pushing them away. From online information, Jordan Weissmann article based on ‘America’s Awful College Dropout Rates’ had gave statistics of college student in 2008. Jordan quoted, “Of those who started school at age 20 or younger—as 76 percent of 2008 enrollees did—about 59 percent complete a degree. For older students, graduation rates were closer to 40 percent.” Sadly, college rates had decreased during the year of 2008 and till this day, it continues to drop. Having less students in college can also damage the economic system. Even if another 25 years is to pass with the same situation, students in the United States and the system will not be affordable of having a higher education.
Enough is enough. The struggle of trying to afford tuitions and other student loans, lots of students and their families have to sacrifice to move forward with their lives. There are some people who can actually raise money to attend college, but not everyone is the same. In the beginning of 2015, President Barack Obama had declare of giving students the chance to attend a 2-year community college, if a student is willing to work hard and maintain their grades including their GPA. About forty percent of college students had decided to choose a community college because it was cheaper than a regular 4-year college. To keep this promise, the federal government is willing to cover seventy five percent average of the cost in a community college. Recently, this week Obama had request a live public conference explaining the plan for a higher education. In the speech, Obama explained, “Some are young and starting out. Some are older and looking for a better job. Some are veterans and single parents trying to transition back into the job market. Whoever you are, this plan is your chance to graduate ready for the new economy, without a load of debt.” The goal is to reduce college students enrollment and consider the plan as a guarantee. Not only, but it can also raise people into middle class. It is always a good thing to change and make a difference to help out students and their future.
It’s always better to receive a degree rather than walking out empty handed. Classrooms should be filled and more books are to be open. Maybe students are motivated to apply for the new college plan but more progress is being proceeded to make a change. It is a challenge to make a difference but it benefits most students to chase their dreams.
